Half a Cloak
... You may have heard of St. Martin of Tours. He is the patron saint of the poor, soldiers, conscientious objectors and tailors. The story he is most know for goes that as a young soldier he was one day riding his horse and was met at the gates of the city by a scantily clad beggar. He impulsively cut his military cloak in half to share it with the man. That night he dreamed of Jesus wearing the half cloak he had given away.
As a child it struck me as odd that Martin de Tours cut his cloak in half. Why didn’t be just give the whole cloak to the shivering and penniless fellow? Wasn’t he being a little stingy? It seemed strange to me that this man who could have given all but instead gave half was held up as the model of generosity.....
